This is a lightly used Musicvox Space Cadet USB 4-String Bass that is currently out of production. USB stands for Ultimate Short-Scale Bass. The bass features a 30” neck scale which works great for people with smaller hands, and for anyone trying to get the thuddy snap and funky vibe of mid-60s Paul McCartney and Carol Kay.
The Space Cadet USB has a Mahogany body with a Maple neck and a Rosewood fingerboard that is fitted with big pearloid inlays and plus-size frets. The neck profile is a wide, shallow D with comfortable shoulders as you head to the higher frets. The body, neck and headstock are all bound in a nice ‘faded-cream’ binding. You’ve also got the signature keystone-shaped Musicvox headstock and a cool triangular pickguard that adds a little art deco vibe.
Hardware includes Musicvox deluxe chrome locking mini-tuners, a trapeze tailpiece and an adjustable Rosewood bridge with saddle inserts. There are mini-bass humbuckers in the bridge and a big EB-style single-coil in the neck, both controlled by master Volume and Tone knobs, as well as a three-way pickup toggle.
Plugged in the Space Cadet is a blast to play. As with most short-scale basses it was made for jamming and melodic runs. The neck is quick and narrow, making for easy lead lines. Groove-oriented passages are easy with your fretting hand. Tone-wise, you get a nice deep growl with notes that pop cleanly when using the neck humbucker. Conversely, leaving the toggle on in the middle position and you hear nothing but great tones. Slap a fuzz or overdrive pedal on top when you want to play some Jack Bruce or Jack Casady licks.
I absolutely love this bass. I am reluctantly selling it because I already have another Space Cadet USB 4, and I just don’t need 2.
