This is a mint, like new Eastwood PB Fretless Guitar. The plastic is still on the pickguard. The PB Fretless is inspired by the Paul Barth Fretless Guitar made in the Bartell factory in Riverside California during the 60’s. It was played by none other than John Lennon, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and John Paul Jones.
The body is made of Tone Chambered Mahogany. It features a Maple top and a Maple bolt-on neck with a zero-fret Ebony fingerboard.
There are two EW-Retro SC pickups, 3-way switching with individual, volume and tone controls, as well as a Tune-o-matic stop tail bridge and Gotoh tuners.
With no frets, there’s no interruption in the string from the bridge, up the neck of the guitar. The lack of frets creates a unique, warm, but less amplified sound that works across all types of music.
The fretless guitar’s most significant advantage is the range of sound it can produce. Without frets to space the strings, the guitar can produce sounds outside of the Western music scale. Many guitarists consider a fretless as an extra axe in the armory.
Fretless guitars are uncommon in the world of modern music. And, they’re not easy to come by. This Eastwood PB Fretless Guitar is a unique, affordable, and nicely made instrument, that is available to everyone. And it is the only alternative to a real Paul Barth fretless that I am aware of.
I really want to keep this one, but I have way too many guitars!
Here’s a video detailing the history behind a fretless Bartell played by both John Lennon and George Harrison.
