This is a very uncommon 40th Anniversary reissue of the Burns Hank Marvin Signature 6 string electric guitar (1964) in a rare Sunburst Flame finish. This is the only one of its kind I’ve ever seen. The guitar is in mint (as new) operating and cosmetic condition (see photos). The case is in fine shape, but the right latch can be a little sticky and sometimes pops open. The guitar has not been played, but it has been moved around in its case within a climate controlled storage room.
Even though the guitar is a reissue it is built to the same exacting standards as the original built for Hank Marvin who fronted The Shadows, Britain’s answer to The Ventures.
The 25.5” Scale guitar features 21 Medium Frets, a select American Alder body, a Canadian Hard Rock Maple neck and a Rosewood Fingerboard.
There is a 3-Piece Tortoise Shell Scratchplate and chrome hardware throughout. Sound is provided by 3 Handmade Burns Rez-O-Matic (slanted) Pickups using USA Alnico Magnets. The guitar has 1 x Volume Control, 2 x Tone Controls and a 5-Way Switch Selector. There is also a Rezo-Tube Vibrato System Tailpiece, Made With Duralumin, that is engraved: “Designed and Handcrafted for Hank B Marvin (signature) by Burns” (see pictures). The instrument weighs in at 10.8 pounds.
As a reissue guitar it comes with some fun collector goodies: an original style hard case in Grey Crocodile with Blue Interior & Case Candy, a Burns Black Leather Strap with Hank Marvin Signature, and a Burns Leather Pouch Containing the Tool Kit!
The Hank Marvin Signature ’64 is beautifully balanced, whether played seated or standing, and it looks, sounds, and plays great! This is the perfect guitar to get the authentic jangly surf sounds of the 60s!
From Vintage Guitar Magazine: The Burns Hank Marvin Guitar
The Hank Marvin 6 string electric guitar was introduced by Burns in ’64 as a tribute to the great english picker who fronted The Shadows, Britain’s answer to The Ventures.
Its offset double-cutaway shape was similar to the split sound, with the hooked upper horn. Offered in white only, this had the deep scroll headstock. Like the “Bison” it had a “split” three-piece pickguard assembly of laminated tortoise, the logo now down on the treble horn.
The Marvin had three Rez-O-Matik single-coil pickups mounted at an angle, like the split sound bass. These had the long ‘Rezo-Tube” vibrato system and simplified electronics, with a three-way select, one volume, and two tones.
